His career began in landscape installation, where he spent a decade learning how outdoor spaces come together — grading, drainage, planting, and the finishing details that turn a yard into something you’re proud of. That foundation led naturally to excavation, and four years ago he launched First Western to bring that same eye for quality to the bigger picture: site prep, earthwork, and the groundwork that makes every great project possible.
Steven grew up in Rapid City, South Dakota and made Montana home in 2012 — and it’s easy to see why he stayed. When he’s not running equipment, you’ll find him skiing the backcountry, floating a river, or just getting outside. That love for the land isn’t just a hobby — it’s what drives him to do this work right.
